Matthew’s vast experience and service to the community has given him a unique understanding of Knoxville’s challenges. His priorities will grow and deepen through this campaign’s work to listen and learn from 4th District neighbors.
On City Council, Matthew Will Build A Knoxville That Works For All Of Us.
HOUSING AFFORDABILITY
“I previously owned a home but have been a renter since 2018. Rents and housing costs are higher than ever in Knoxville and across the region due to unprecedented growth — and there is no “stop button” to these growing pains. By cutting red tape to allow new types of housing, encouraging density along our corridors, and expanding protections for renters, the City Council can relieve the shortage of housing in Knoxville while meeting the varying needs of each neighborhood. While the number one cause of homelessness is a lack of housing, we also need to invest in supportive housing solutions, harm-reduction strategies, and mental health treatment to further help those experiencing homelessness. We must remember that our city is judged by what it provides to the well-off as well as how it treats the people most in need.”
“Knoxville has traffic patterns and infrastructure needs that have been neglected for too long, leading to traffic and congestion. Investing in more reliable, frequent, and safe public transportation will help relieve pressure on our streets and reduce traffic. We need to continue improving our city’s walkability and bikeability, encouraging alternative transportation that is safe for all. Let us increase our focus on safe infrastructure improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike through protected bike lanes, additional sidewalks, and reimagining our streetscapes. A more connected Knoxville is one with greater opportunity, more jobs, and equitable mobility for all.”

QUALITY OF LIFE & NEIGHBORHOODS
“There are many things I adore about Knoxville. I love our parks and the outdoors. I love to visit our small businesses, running into neighbors and friends. I love our live music and festivals. I will champion elements that contribute to our city’s culture in the midst of a period of immense growth. I will bring a focus on creating greater access to outdoor recreation, a strong commitment to public safety, expanding economic opportunity for our small businesses, and giving young people greater opportunity to stay and thrive in Knoxville. I am passionate for our city’s spirit, and together, as we grow, I want the things that make Knoxville so special to grow with it.”
